Recent improvements on micro-thermocouple based SThM
2017
The scanning thermal microscope (SThM) has become a versatile tool for local surface temperature mapping or measuring thermal properties of solid materials. In this article, we present recent improvements in a SThM system, based on a micro-wire thermocouple probe associated with a quartz tuning fork for contact strength detection. Some results obtained on an electrothermal micro-hotplate device, operated in active and passive modes, allow demonstrating its performance as a coupled force detection and thermal measurement system.
Earlier Developed Techniques
2014
The first electrochemical experiments were performed with solid materials, esp. metals. However, these experiments, conducted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, were directed toward the elucidation of the basic features of the electrical action of chemical substances and the chemical action of electricity. Initially, metals played the major role; only later it became obvious that many chemical compounds possess metallic or semiconducting properties that can be utilized in electrochemical cells. Parallel to the studies of new electrode materials, solid electrolytes were discovered and entire solid galvanic cells could be constructed. In this book, we will entirely neglect pure solid…
New experimental stopping power data of 4He, 16O, 40Ar, 48Ca and 84Kr projectiles in different solid materials
2018
Abstract New experimental data on energy loss of 4 He, 16 O, 40 Ar, 48 Ca and 84 Kr ions in thin, self-supporting foils of C, Al, Ni, Ag, Lu, Au, Pb and Th are presented. The measurements, using the TOF-E method, were done in a very broad energy range around the stopping power maximum; typically from 0.1 to 11 MeV/u. When available, the extracted stopping power values are compared with the previously published data. The overall agreement is good although a fair comparison is difficult as the covered energy range is much larger than in previous measurements. The small error bars and a broad coverage allowed us to test the predictions of theoretical codes: PASS, CasP, and semi-empirical progr…
Fundamentals of photocatalysis: The role of the photocatalysts in heterogeneous photo-assisted reactions
2021
Abstract This chapter provides some general definitions of heterogeneous photocatalysis and evaluates its performance, which is influenced by the parameters most closely related to the properties of the solid material that acts as a photocatalyst. It also discusses aspects of heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions and explains the properties that influence photoactivity. Finally, the chapter examines thermodynamic and kinetic features, including mechanistic details and parameters to define the reaction rate and correlates them to the effects of the interaction of light with the photocatalyst surface and adsorption-desorption of species involved in heterogeneous photo-assisted reactions.
